Metro Nocturne

Destination Newcastle > Attractions > Metro Nocturne

State-of-the-art low-power LED lighting and a new colour scheme will transform the bridge into a new landmark at one of the busiest gateways to Tyne and Wear – but consume less power than the average family home.

The huge scale of the bridge makes Nocturne one of the largest permanent art installations in the UK.

The light effects that Nocturne shows are determined by the colours displayed in digital photographs that have been sent. This means that anyone can change the way the bridge looks and feels by sending a photograph, or a scan of an image, in fact, anything that can be sent as a jpeg will control the appearance of the bridge.

The finished work will be seen by more than eight million people who use the neighbouring King Edward VII railway bridge every year, as well as millions more road users and visitors to the Newcastle Gateshead quaysides and surrounds.
