Shields Ferry

Destination Newcastle > Travel > Shields Ferry

A Shields Ferry – either the Pride of the Tyne or the brand new Spirit of the Tyne – operates across the River Tyne between North and South Shields ferry landings every 30 minutes in each direction. The crossing takes about seven minutes.

Both boats are also available for private hire and used for river trips along the Tyne on some Sunday afternoons in the summer.

Because Shields Ferry is operated by Nexus which also operate the Tyne & Wear Metro, ticketing is integrated with the Metro ticketing system. Metro passes and tickets are valid on the Ferry as well as Tyne and Wear Network Tickets and Day Rovers. New style Transfare tickets can be purchased allowing one-way travel on Shields Ferry and either a bus or Metro. Tickets are purchased when boarding the ferry
